1.   Optimize Your Sign Angle To Gain More Impressions

Sign angle is one of the top-5 factors of sign visibility, according to the International Sign Association (ISA).

People see signs best when they are placed directly in front of them with the message angled in their direction. Every inch or angle of rotation you move away from this ideal viewing position reduces your sign’s impact.

Obviously, you cannot place your sign directly in front of incoming traffic or pedestrians, but you can set yourself up for success by placing your signs perpendicular to the road or sidewalk.  This gives approaching drivers and pedestrians plenty of time to spot, read, and act on your sign message, rather than flashing them a quick glimpse as they pass you by. According to ISA research, signs mounted parallel to the roadway need to be 70% larger than signs mounted at a 90 degree angle to achieve the same impact.

This kind of perpendicular sign setup is easy to achieve with hanging “blade” signs, monument signs, A-Frame signs, and building signs or graphics on walls perpendicular to the roadway.

2.   Mind The Property Line And Stay Out Of The Visibility Triangle

When setting up your outdoor signs, it is generally a good idea to place them as close to the street as regulations allow.

But be careful—straying too close to the roadway or blocking sightlines is prohibited. According to Section 90-1 of the Conroe Code of Ordinances, roadside signs must be placed “two (2) feet behind the property line and out of the visibility triangle at all street and driveway intersections.”

So what is the visibility triangle, exactly? Section 14-501 defines it as “a sight triangle at a street interaction formed by the legs of the intersecting curb or edge of pavement lines and a diagonal line between the two legs at points that are 35 feet from the intersection.” It looks something like this:

3.   Keep Your Signs Off Of Public Assets In Conroe, TX

Most people know not to place signs on public property, but what about public assets—fire hydrants, stop signs, electric/telephone poles, utility boxes, and so on—that appear on your business lot?

You might be surprised to learn that these are also off-limits. Section 90-3 of the Conroe Code of Ordinances states that “no sign may be placed upon any utility pole, traffic sign, or device or other public improvement.”

That said, if your business is located in Conroe’s downtown district, there are some exceptions to this rule. Specifically, you are allowed to place a single free standing sidewalk sign or A-Frame sign no larger than 6 square feet per side and 4 feet tall on sidewalks adjacent to the entrance of the business during your hours of operation.
